From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
My father was in London visiting from the United States for an American football game when he unexpectedly passed away. My daughter and I made emergency travel to be by his side and to bring him home. Monica was amazing in providing very detailed step by step guidance and best options to get him home; not just verbally but she wrote out each step. Her compassion and dignity during this difficult time was a tremendous help easing the funeral process for us here in the UK. We are extremely grateful.
My experience with Kenyon was amazing from start to finish Monica and Valerie were brilliant everything was dealt with in such a dignified way and my mum had the best sendoff from them
Our whole family are very grateful to Kenyon Funeral Directors for helping us through the painful, emotional period of time that we experienced upon the loss of our mother.
Their experience, expertise and professionalism guided us through the intricacies of a strange and often confusing landscape, trying to cope with the deep-felt sorrow while at the same time making the necessary arrangements to complete the services.
I would particularly like to thank Antonio for advising on the best funeral plan for our needs, Monica for always being available as the funeral approached, and finally Debbie for her compassion and understanding on the actual day of the funeral.
Overall, the entire Kenyon team showed great respect, kindness and care to our mother and to us all, and we will always be extremely indebted to them.
With thanks,
Simon Laffy
