From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.

A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.

Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.

Laura, who I understand has become the branch manager at JH Kenyon Hampstead during 2025, was remarkably helpful, understanding, and communicative at every point in our experience. She went the extra mile to help us arrange a funeral in a one-week timespan between passing and the funeral taking place. Thank you.

My family and I couldn't be more grateful to have met Laura and have her and all of her team's support through a very difficult time. From the very start, Laura was a comforting guide who helped my sister and I navigate everything we needed, and ensured everything was sorted for our dad's service. Laura and her team really could not have been any more kind and compassionate every step of the way.

Laura was extremely helpful and caring from the moment we initially spoke. At what has been a difficult time Laura guided and supported us arranging my Mother's funeral. We had a funeral plan which Laura took us through every step of the way making things clear and easy to arrange. Our wishes were respected and met. Rosalie our celebrant was recommended to us by Laura, she was the perfect person to lead us through the service, she was calm and spoke about my Mother with such feeling. Fabio was amazing on the day, supporting us as a family through the funeral service. Giving us time after the service to reflect on the floral tributes. His parting gesture to us was signing 'thank you' in British sign language which meant a great deal to us all. If you are looking for someone to listen, care and learn about your loved one Laura is the person to contact and help make all the arrangements so you can say goodbye to your loved one. I would recommend the services of H J Kenyon in Hampstead, they are nothing but caring and professional!

I found that all the staff of J H Kenyon, Pond Street, Hampstead who were involved with our relative’s funeral, were highly professional, caring and very supportive. Special mention must go to Laura, the Funeral Arranger who looked after us guiding us through every aspect of the arrangements. Her caring approach and guidance was invaluable. Every part of the funeral was explained in great detail and she made us feel very comfortable and confident. Our appointed funeral director and his team of attendants on the day treated us all with great care, respect and dignity making sure all went well as we planned and expected.

Laura recommended Rosalie, our celebrant, to perform the service who made regular contact with us by phone, video and in person prior to the funeral to ensure our wishes and requests were met in full.

Overall, we had great confidence in Laura and the rest of the JH Kenyon team and wish to extend our personal gratitude for helping us deal with everything at such a difficult and emotional time.

I feel that this is a very difficult time in most people’s lives, and I was very apprehensive about the process, until meeting Laura at JH Kenyon, who is natural, kind, sensitive and knowledgable and lead us through the process, step by step.

Laura made herself available to us, to help with anything we needed, and went over and above what is required in her role to ensure that we were comfortable and confident with everything.

On the day, the service was just right and everything we had hoped for and more. The flowers were exquisite, the slide show and music well timed and moving.

Our celebrant recommended by Laura was wonderful, and lead a beautiful service, as were the funeral director and his attendants.

The order of service booklets were top quality and a lovely memento for people to take with them.

I can’t speak highly enough of Laura, and recommend her to anyone with a funeral to arrange.

With Laura’s support, kindness, warmth and enthusiasm, everything will be created for your loved one to have a most beautiful send off that will do them proud.
